CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

"What happened?" Angel rushed to Matt's side as he saw him at the front desk, his hand wrapped in gauze. He'd been worried when Matt hadn't called him, but figured he'd gone home and fallen asleep.

"It's nothing. I got mad and hit a wall. I had it x-rayed. It's not broken, but I've sprained several fingers and my wrist." Matt shook his head. "I was stupid to let him get to me."

"Tyler?" Angel sat down on the corner of the desk.

"Yeah. I ran into him at the gym. I should have known better than to go there. He said some shit and got me worked up. I hit the wall instead of him. Not sure that was the best choice. At least if I'd hit him I'd know he was hurting too." Matt slumped back in his chair. "I'm sorry I didn't call you last night. I went to the hospital and was too worked up to talk to anyone."

He was a little hurt by the comment, but understood. "It's okay. I'm just glad it's not worse."

"Anyway, forget about me. I've decided to make some changes around here." He waved his uninjured hand around the shop. "You've done great and have proven yourself to me, so if you feel you are ready, you can start doing some tattoos as long as we let the customers know you're new and decide for themselves. You can add your portfolio books to the pile with ours…" He nodded to the stack in the corner. "And you get a percentage of any tats you do and any tips you make."

Angel stared at him as he digested what he was saying. "You're serious?"

Matt nodded. "You've earned it. The work you did on my back is amazing. I have no doubt about your talents. You've paid attention and learned all the key things you needed to."

Angel went to Matt and hugged him tightly. "Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me."

Matt hugged him for a second before pulling back. "Now, this doesn't mean you don't have to still do the shit jobs too."

Angel frowned.

"But Liz and I will be sharing the work with you." Matt grinned.

Angel slapped him softly. "Thank you for this. I won't let you down, I promise."

"I know you won't." Matt kissed him. "I missed you last night."

"I missed you too. I thought you'd gone home and fell asleep watching TV."

"I wish. I didn't get out of the E.R. until after two. It took forever to get an x-ray." Matt looked down at his hand. "Stupidest thing I've ever done other than ever agreeing to date that jerk."

"Do you think he'll stay away from you now?"

"I don't know. He seems to think I'll come crawling back to him." He pulled Angel onto his lap. "It won't ever happen. I've got something good and I'm not letting it go." He nuzzled Angel's neck.

Angel hoped that was true. He wasn't worried that Matt would go back to Tyler, but he did worry that he would get tired of him going back and forth between Sara, Jess, and him.
